How much water should you actually drink in a day? Find out!

Yes, we know! Eight glasses of water, eight times a day.  This mantra has been drilled deep into our minds by teachers, coaches, and doctors since childhood. But is this backed by facts? The stark truth is that there is little or no research to prove that eight glasses of water eight times a day is the ideal measure and frequency of water consumption for all.

Then how do we know how much water do we need to drink to enable our body to perform all its functions seamlessly? Here are some things to consider.

1. It’s not a one size fits all measure

Your lifestyle plays an important role in determining the amount of water that you need to consume. If you lead an active lifestyle, your water consumption level must be high. On the other hand, if you have a sedentary lifestyle and spend your day in an air-conditioned environment where there is no scope for water loss through perspiration, drinking more than 2 to 2.5 litres of water is not advisable. It will end up accumulating in your kidney and cause a host of kidney-related problems.

2. Pay attention to your thirst

What is the best way of knowing that you need to drink up? You’re feeling thirsty! Thirst is a clear indicator your hydration status. Since the Stone Age, thirst has guided people to replenish their water reserves from time to time. So the simplest thing to do to remain hydrated is to drink water whenever you are thirsty.

3. A general water guide

Drink two to four glasses of water after waking up. Your body needs this water replenishment at this time as it has used up the water stored in your body overnight. If you’re spending the day at home without much activity or if you work in an air-conditioned office, do not drink more than 2 to 2.5 litres of water per day. However, if you are a field worker like an architect or salesperson, you need to drink around three litres of water daily. Also, you need to increase your water intake during summers to keep yourself hydrated by drinking water.  Having electrolyte or glucose water is also advisable on unusually warm days.

4. Don’t drink enough water? Here’s what you can do

If you feel easily dehydrated during the day, try some of these ways to get the adequate amounts of water into your system effortlessly. Keep a water bottle by your desk at work and take several sips of water each hour. If you are always on the go, carry a cool water flask with you take sips throughout the day. You can also take a break from your work to get up and refill your bottle at the drinking fountain. Add flavour to your water by squeezing some lime or adding mint leaves. Infused water is healthy and tastes great.

is it important to drink the right amount of water?

Just as a machine needs oil to run smoothly, your body needs water to keep every part of your body working properly. From flushing out of wastes to maintain the correct temperature, water plays a vital role in aiding numerous bodily functions. Moreover, it helps prevent kidney stones and constipation. Your body constantly loses water through breathing, perspiration, and urination. This makes it necessary for you to drink the right amount of water to stay healthy.

So now that you know how much water you need to consume to stay fit and how to consume the right amount of water, go ahead and drink up! Make sure you drink only purified water to keep diseases at bay and stay hydrated.
